Stillwater History
Stillwater was founded in June 1992 as Children’s Home RTF, Inc. by the Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference, with the mission of providing mental health services to children who would otherwise be placed for extended periods of time in psychiatric hospitals.
At that time, the NYS-Office of Mental Health had initiated the development and licensing of Residential Treatment Facilities as a sub-class of psychiatric hospitals. It was hoped that the facilities would provide a more normalized living environment, where children could thrive under the care and supervision of professional staff, while receiving critically necessary treatment that would enable them to return to their own families, communities, and neighborhood public schools.
In early 2008 the new name and image of Stillwater was adopted to better reflect the nurturing environment provided at the facility.
